Blue Oyster Cult: “Chatter on the Tide” (Live 1972-1973)

This mix provides a prequel to Blue Oyster Cult’s 1975 live album, “On Your Feet, or On Your Knees,” which capped the band’s classic, initial studio run: “Blue Oyster Cult,” “Tyranny and Mutation,” and “Secret Treaties” (1972-1974).

In 1976, everything changed, with the release of the completely different “Agents of Fortune,” containing the hit, “Don’t Fear the Reaper.”

Pulling from four bootlegs recorded April 1972 through December 1973, this mix compiles as many different songs as possible, mostly in the earliest live recording available. (The NYC Academy of Music show predates the recording of “Secret Treaties.”)

I’ve only repeated two songs, one because it changed a lot, and the other because it was the big jam number. The fidelity of the sources varies, but all should be pleasurably inhabitable by fans. Volume has been equalized.

Thank you for this latest dive into BOC! I don't think we've really reckoned with significance of this band. Something like a Yankee Hawkwind or UFO featuring collaborations from Patti Smith and Richard Meltzer.
Thanks for this. The show from NY, four songs anyway were used for the "The Blue Öyster Cult Bootleg EP" promo. It's cool to have more of that.
Edward, I used 3 of the promo ep tracks to lead this mix (all but Buck's Boogie); that's why those tracks sound better than the others from that show! Kit, I agree. Early BOC is a big deal, IMO.
my heavens! this blog is amazing. thank you.
You're welcome, Kurt!
Agents Of Fortune was released in 1976. Thank you for a good blog, you’re a fine subhuman.
This is *awesome*. This along with OYFOOYK, the expanded version of Some Enchanted Evening, and then with Live in the West 1975, makes for a great set of live BOC. Thanks for putting this together, John. :-D
Jaspar, you're welcome! If you would like to return the favor, I could use an upgrade of Live in West 1975. All I have is 128kbps.
This is where I got mine: http://soundaboard.blogspot.com/2010/02/blue-oy... I'll check that version tonight when I get home ... But I suspect this might be where you got yours too? :-) There is a CD version, but I don't know if it's any higher res though: https://www.discjapan.com/product/blue-oyster-c... Among other places ...
I checked the spectrograms for my version. Looks like 128kbs too. Ugh. Sounds fine, but it would be great to have a higher res version.
Jaspar, thanks for checking!
Jaspar, do you have an audio recording of this show?! https://ultimateclassicrock.com/original-blue-o...
No ... I'm going to have to look for that one too! Maybe a little surprised they didn't officially release that one ...
I'm listening to Live in the West 1975 again. I did not remember how poor the sound quality of this is. Not due to the sources, but to the MP3 encoding. If I can find the Definitive Edition CD for cheap, I'll let you know. While I'm thinking this is just the same bad MP3 files written to CD, there's a chance that they added the "Definitive Edition" to differentiate it vs the MP3 version because it *is* better quality. I'll let you know ...
I found this, but it's an audience recording: http://theultimatebootlegexperience7.blogspot.c... Still looking ...
Ahhhh .... https://www.amazon.com/iHeart-Radio-Theater-N-Y... Some reviews in there too!
Doesn't seem to be the same show though ... Sorry for all the posts!
Sorry, when I go nuts, I really go for broke: :-D https://www.ebay.com/itm/393446745008?nma=true&... Two shows? Nov 5 Best Buy Theater, and Dec 17 iHeart Radio Theater?
